Adrian,

Microsoft took it upon themselves to "help" you when they created XP. They added a nifty little bug (Feature) called System Restore. Furthermore, they decided that .gdb files should be included under this sweet feature. Either rename your file to .fdb, or go in and turn off system restore, or both. See "System Restore" under the "help and support" menu in XP. I'm betting this will help your problem immensely.

Watch out for disk shadowing under 2003 Server: that can eat you alive too, I understand, although I've never used 2003 personally.
