HI Lester!

My Win XP is the server and my Win 2K is a client, my Linux is not involved
yet.
It's no problem to connect local so I'm confused.

Which machine is server and which are clients?
Can you connect locally to 1.5?

Sound like a network problem. I think if the server was not running you
would get - 'Connection was Actively Refused'

Firewall may allow ping but not port number. XP defaults to switching
the firewall on!
