Subject Linux Security Question

Hi there,

We are running FireBird in a Mandrake 9 Linux box connected to the
Internet. We want to allow access to the database only to the
localhost and the local LAN, but want to reject requests from the
Internet.

We want to know if this can be done simply by configuring hosts.equiv
or gds_hosts.equiv (and how) or if we need to setup a firewall to do this.

Currently we are using FB 1.0 but plan to upgrade to 1.5 soon.

Thanks in advance for any hints,
