I read the README.makefiles document in the doc directory, and it
gives instructions for linux:

autoconf
./configure
$cd src
$make > make.log 2>&1 ; cat make.log | grep -v warning > make2.log ;
vi make2.log


I think you should run 'autogen.sh', not autoconf directly...
