Hi Uwe,
Can I ask why you are itching to return to the Borland fold?
Inprise were going to drop Interbase like a hot potatoe at one time, it was
the time when Borland became Inprise and was persuaded by that wonderful
breed of management consultant to sell of everything except the IDE
development work. There would have been no Firebird but for a hard fighting
group that persuaded them to release the source code. When Inprise realised
what they had lost they tried equally hard to get it back, and are now
presumably working to ensure that Firebird and Interbase will not remain
compatible for too long, although I would have thought that this was a short
sighted view on their part.
We use both and are happy with both but the split between them is starting
to show up and we may have to make the choice soon. While I can move
between the two I have no problem both are reliable, both have advantages
and disadvantages, have a small compact footprint, and are polite in a
single server multi-database environment.
I can think of a few competitors that fail in any one of these categories.
