Yes the backups do complete. Our current setup is a simple Windows
batch file which backs up all the databases in a given folder with
GBAK. The Command Prompt window which opens when the batch file runs
eventually closes, indicating of course that the batch job has
finished.

Also we know the backups are valid as they are automatically copied to
another system each night, restore and validated.
