There is already a contribution made for both SMP Superserver and
64-bit CPU support. The company made the contribution via IB-Phoenix
and it is what Jim Starkey is working on, which is known as the Vulcan
project. Vulcan is supposed to be the base code for FB 3.0, and Vulcan
should be available in the next few months(and hopefully the first
beta real soon). And if I remember, Jim started in December 2003, and
he's the best man for the job(although all the other developers are
excellent), since he is the original Interbase developer and knew what
part of the code needed changes. But, Borland apparently massacred his
code and the changes were difficult to make it easily SMP compliant.
So, some if not a good portion of the code had to be basically
rewritten. Just to give you an idea he estimated about 3 months for
the whole task, and it's still not fully completed, but getting there.
