Hi Raigo

I use the KnowledgeTree Document Management Server software
which you can find on sourceforge.net or http://kt-
dms.sourceforge.net/

Its obviously not in Firebird but I think it would be worth looking at for
some pointers / ideas.
I use it for documents and CAD also though only potentially hundreds
of docs.
They have a neat system whereby you can define document types
which I find very useful.
