With non-Borland legacy tools, means there is no gds32.dll in the system
directory (copy fbclient.dll from firebird bin directory and rename)

Means you are using IBConsole, which won't use gds32.dll if it has the
'wrong' version string. You can build a compatible gds32.dll for IBConsole
using the instclient.exe program in RC8.
