I can definitely vouch for moving to 1.5

but don't forget the other issues.
Obviously check the system restore

Rename the extension to the db to *.FDB

Check your virus scanning software. It should exclude the database
extension from scanning, especially in autoscan.

Do you have a firewall thats choking things off? Especially Windows
ICF.
