I think that this is the best way. I can use a fixed alias that never
changes and, in the installer, the only thing the installator must
supply is the server machine name. This name is then saved in the
registry by the installer itself (I actually use Wise InstallBuilder
8).

For now I cannot try because I'm still using Firebird 1.02 and I'm
waiting for 1.5 final release.

Thanks also to Marco for his suggestion, but I have to keep things as
simple as possible.
