It's working as it should..
What do you think it should return when you pass it a value of 10, and a
state of "unknown"..

NULL is a state (a state of unknown), NOT a value.. Any math done with a
NULL *must* return a null !!

For instance, what should 10 + "an unknown value" be equal to ?? It can
only be equal unknown.
