Yes, it is still true.

It always depends on the type of corruption. But, chances are that
you lost data and would have to pay someone to repair what you have
left.

You might want to have a look at Firebird 1.5 RC3. First of all, the
speed has increased dramatically, that you might not need Forced
Writes Off. But, if you still want Forced Writes Off, extra
configuration parameters has been added, so you can tweak when the
disk writes take place, and make sure you have a UPS that will
shutdown the server automatically.

It's done at the database level, not the engine level.
