solved myself, the program does "SET DATABASE ..." and the call to gpre
specified a database as well (the same one). Hence, presumably, it found the
same table in both connections and said "ambiguous"

As you are not allowed to specify both (according the manual) can I suggest
that this could be caught earlier and explicitly
