I've never needed anything more than just a clear response to my telnet
command. After that it's time to fire some SQL at the server.
my order of diagnostic is
ping servername to get a response (unless the network has denied a response
via ping)
then telnet server 3050 (you may not get a ping but if the port is closed,
then it's no good going any further)
then open a real connection
