Hugh, the most important thing now is to sort out the current problems. As
someone said, the problem may well be with the application: a problem with
long running transactions. Check the statistics on the header page (gfix
and IBconsole can show this). If a backup+restore (with gbak) solves the
speed problem (and in particular if the backup is slow), this indicates an
application problem. This may be alleviated, but the apps need fixing.

When you say 200 clients, is this ONE server and 200 clients (or 200 server
installations)? If there is one server (or just a few servers) you should
be able to easily upgrade to a later IB (e.g. 6.0.1.6). I would think that
client softare need not be upgraded. A move to Firebird (or later IB
versions) will need more work.
