Are you certain interbase.so needs to exist? I build PHP 4.2.3 from source
on two different RedHat 8.0 (and earlier versions also) with the following
configuration:

./configure' '--with-ldap' '--with-xml' '--with-interbase=/opt/interbase'
'--with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs' '--prefix=/usr' '--exec-prefix=/usr'
'--sysconfdir=/etc' '--localstatedir=/var' '--with-config-file-path=/etc'
'--enable-inline-optimization' '--host=i686-pc-linux-gnu'
'--build=i686-pc-linux-gnu' '--target=i386-redhat-linux-gnu'
'--program-prefix=' '--with-pear=/usr/share/pear' '--enable-bcmath'

The important thing here is the "--with-interbase=" part. Path is where-ever
you've installed interbase/firebird.

Everything works, there is no 'interbase.so'. Interbase access is
compiled right into the PHP module. PHP doesn't care if I'm using interbase
or firebird. Both work.
Webserver is Apache 2.0; on Apache < 2 use "--with-apxs=...", not apxs2.
