Can you determine the cause of the problem? I've used the installer
before on multiple machines without problems.

That is old baggage from the original (linux) install scripts. It will
be fixed, but correctly supporting xinetd should go a long way to help
with the problem.

I don't even see where (in the install script) it wipes
/Library/Frameworks/Firebird.framework. Removing the
Firebird.framework directory by hand should allow you to reinstall.
