When you install Firebird server on FreeBSD, in /etc/inetd.conf will
appear a line like this:
gds_db stream tcp nowait firebird /usr/interbase/bin/gds_inet_server
gds_inet_server
It's all you need to do, when you restart your FreeBSD the services
in "inetd.conf" will be started and the clientes will be able to connect to
database.
I think the better idea is to use release 5.1, I'm using release 5.1
at this moment.
We have a lot of projects using Firebird with FreeBSD and all are
excelent.
Another thing is to use FreeBSD 4.8/4.9, It's also recomended in some
cases, but we are not having problems with 5.1 release.
