parameter -old_descriptions in gbak: What's this?

The documentation just says 'backups metadata in old-style format'. I guess
this is something related to old versions of Interbase, and could be just
ignored in Firebird.

Does anyone know the version of IB that this 'old-style' applyes?
Some pratical use of this parameter?
