Subject firebird on HP-UX / debian linux; "possible-newbie-to-be" questions
Author pietjepuk1964 <j.deboer@acasa.utwente.nl>
Hi,

My company is looking at a piece of software that is using the
firebird engine. So far i've managed to stay clear of using windows
servers in our HP-UX / debian Linux / Novell server-environment and i
would like to keep it that way.
Our existing main application uses a HP9000 with HPUX 11.0, so the
most likely candidate to install firebird on would be this HP9000.
Only minor changes in backupprocedures etcetera would result and for
the most part this (rather expensive) machine is scratching its own
butt for lack of activity so i thought, why not? Point is that it is
not clear to me whether firebird works exclusively with HP-UX on an
intel platform, furthermore, would it work with UX-11 instead of
UX10.20. The link http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=files seems
to suggest this, but the download area and release notes are a bit
inconclusive. So, the question would be "does it work with HPUX 11 on
a HP9000 platform?"
If that would be a very probable "no", the following question would
be if anyone has experience running firebird an a debian-linux distro.
Thirdly, if all else fails, i've been looking at a demo-version, and
it seems to me that an actual NT or Win2K "server" would be
unnecessary (an absolute maximum of about 3 users would be working
simultaneously on this firebird engine). Is this a correct assumption?

Thanks for your trouble.
