I have a marvelous opportunity to introduce firebird to a large (42k
employees) firm.
Unfortunately it must start by using a windows perl client on a
windows 2000 machine.
The preferred solution is a DBD "driver" for interbase so a database
neutral api (dbi) could be used in the application.
The problem is the installation of the windows perl dbd module. It is
available from sourceforge,
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dbi-interbase/
in 2 flavors - source to compile or a "binary" install. Both are
behaving truculently, antagonistically, and downright ornery. I've
reported this behaviour to the parent on the sourceforge site and the
interested observers on the "perl windows database" site but I
thought I would mention it here as well.
At heart I believe it is not rotten code but something in the local
environment (my target machine) causing this poor result. I seek
enlightenment from any who have achieved success along this path.
In the interests of honesty I must admit to an intent to move the
client onto firebird, linux, java and struts - they are a publishing
firm with many sites on the web. Perhaps the gods that be know my
heart is not totally pure in this matter.
