Helen,
The drive/database is located in the /usr/<directory>/test directory. The
database file name is 1.gdb. I've renamed it from test.idb to 1.gdb for
testing purposes.

Unfortunately, this is your problem. The database file has to be located
on a drive that is physically controlled by the server. Nothing else will
do.
