Thanks, but that's the problem, all versions give me the same error.
All on one box.
The only ones in the path are FireBirdSS-1.0.0.796-0 and IC20105LinuxJRE13
JRE version 1.3.

I have this set up on another box using CS0.9-41p and IC20001 - which I've
tried to replicate too, but to no avail.

Could Redhat 7.1 be the problem? It works ok on W2K, as my development
machine?
