The Firebird 1.0 release was intended to preserve a high level of
compatibility with Interbase. This was done, among other reasons, to make
it easier to replace Interbase with Firebird.

Since at the moment Firebird and Interbase cannot easily run simultaneously
on the same server, one key decision was whether the same registry keys
should be used. Doing so makes it easier for existing installations to be
recognized when a new install was done.

In future major releases of Firebird I would expect all-Firebird registry
settings to prevail. I hope concurrent installation and operation alongside
Interbase will also be possible.

Fred, since you frequent this list, I'm surprised you did not catch this.
Too busy doing real work? ;)
