Can't offer much, since you don't say what client dialect you are
attempting to use...however

Make a dialect 1 or dialect 2 connection to a dialect 1 database
Make a dialect 3 connection to a dialect 3 database.

i.e. it would be invalid if you were attempting to make a dialect 1 or 2
connection to a dialect 3 database. (There is no such thing as a dialect 2
database; but a dialect 2 client connection can be made to a dialect 1 db
for the purpose of converting to dialect 3 column types).

You also don't say what platform your database is being served from.

What errors do you actually get when attempting to connect to the database?
