If it is then try the TCP/IP protocol
serverIPaddr:e:\database\material.gdb
If not - you need the real hardware drive letter.
Also, a machine name will work a LOT better than an IP
address. The first thing windows does is tries and looks it
up. When it does not find it, it returns what you supplied,
and then checks if it is a valid address - it does not do
that before it does the search!
