Yes you can. At least until the 2 interfaces don't differ too much in
their next respective versions(FB 2.0 and IB 7.0). If you have a tool that
will guaranty support for both, you are well under your way.

Yes I would. There's more bug fixes than IB 6.5 has, since the split of
Interbase and Firebird. You can check the bug fixes for Firebird for
yourself, but don't be overwhelmed by the amount reported and fixed. Some
are feature requests and some are not major bugs. Firebird 1.0 will have
pretty much of the major bugs fixed and FB 1.0 RC2 is, in my opinion, very
solid.
