Daniel, just a guess: can it be that FB1 gbak became sensitive to
IB6 bugs

223059 Updating VARCHAR does not clear old data
412417 Altering from CHAR to VARCHAR - makes RDB$LENGTH and
RDB$CHARACTER_LENGTH not in sync.

Both are easy to check.
