I've noticed this too. Doesn't seem to happen if the server is Linux but
when I test on Windows XP, I often get this hang. Only seems like 4-5
seconds for me but *very* noticable so that you end up clicking on the close
window multiple times since you think you must have missed the first time.

I tracked the hang down to the point where I was sure it was Firebird and not
something in my application that was causing the problem but I didn't have
time to track it further in Firebird itself. I also haven't noticed if it
effects other Windows versions as well or just XP.
