This is already underway with IB Objects and FIB Plus(from which IBX was
created).

But, the problem is that when Firebird 2 and IB7 will be released, the
interface will be different and plans are made by the Firebird development
team to make sure that Firebird can run at the same time than IB on the
same machine without conflicts. This is due to the fact that IB and
Firebird already have difference in the SQL language. As you can see, it's
not just the API that would need to be compatible, but the language as well.
