I think the client specifies the packet size somehow and the server fills
it up. It was a long time ago but I think this is done by JayBird as well.
Blas recently wrote something to set the fetch size using jdbc: I didn't
look into it much but it might actually work:-)

I havent investigated much what comes back in a packet, others have
reported many rows/packet.
