Dmitry,
I understand the reasons for what the Yaffil team is trying to do, but
it's not an excuse for IPL violation. Look, the mess we face now is a
result of cumulated lack of communication, slightly different visions and
language barrier among both groups. Nothing that we can't really sort out
when we "sit down" and talk about it. First, I'm sure that the Firebird
team can help you find a legal way that would fit to your vision how to
support the Yaffil development. Next, although both groups have different
visions and priorities for further FB/YF development, both can have a
profit from free exchange of ideas and maybe code. You mentioned russian
codepages/collations, and I can't see any problem to have them
incorporated to FB beyond the human resource constraints. Of course, I
would expect that Yaffil would like preserve it's distinguishing features
to have an advantage over FB/IB, but what's prevent us to exchange bug
fixes (if not directly by code, then as reports and recipe for fix) ?
There is room for more groups than just two (or three if you'll count
Borland), and I can't see any trouble with Yaffil at Firebird's side
beyond the legal issues, and trouble with "slow motion" and different
priorities from the other side. But I can see how both groups can gain
from mutual cooperation (while maintaining their independence, of
course). But that would require that Yaffil team would go out from
(relative) isolation of Russian IB community.
If Yaffil team is interested to establish such communication link, I'd be
more than happy to help make it happen. Just drop a line to me or
Firebird-admin mailing list.
BTW, Yaffil has some attractive characteristics, so if you'll sort out
the legal issues and break down the communication barrier, you'll have
doors open to other markets. Personally, I can help you to spread the
word about Yaffil and support it here in Czech Republic, and I'm sure
that you will find more doors open too.
Best regards
