In my experience there are some configurations that gbak just cannot
handle. I have managed to create a few databases that gbak cannot
restore so now I simply dont use it for anything except upgrading
databases to new server versions.
I have been working on an alternative backup program, so that I can
still do online backups but not get caught by gbak. If you are
interested you can download and read the help file at:
http://www.telesiscomputing.com.au/dbk.htm

I think it would be worthwhile if you started a discussion on the specific
situations where you managed to create db's that were not
restoreable. Maybe one of the NGs architect/priorities/firebird-devel is
more appropriate than this one.
[Did you perhaps already do this, and the lack of solutions promped you to
roll your own?]
