What I do is:
1. Run gbak + sweep every night.
2. Occasionally (once - twice month) restore to a new database.
This will check that the backup really can be restored, and it gives
me a database for doing testing.
3. Two or three times a year I do a backup+restore of the database.

I don't automate this process. Usually I do this during the weekend. I
can then use the backup from last night and go straight to the restore
part. If your db is busy 24x7 you will have to take another approach.
