InterBase 5.6 has an absolute limit of 254 users for no better reason than it's counted with a short. It was fixed in Firebird very early, so it's likely that Borland followed suit in their commercial IB 6. The 5.6 API will top you out at 254, so it's probably something with your licence.

Either that, or your 149th connection blows the disk cache...or 149 has some other metaphysical significance to IB 5.6...
