The install package is quite rudimentary at the moment, although I anticipate
that it will improve considerably in the weeks to come.
If you install under NT/Win2k (and perhaps XP) Firebird will be set to start
automatically as a service. You can check this in task manager or by the
control panel. It is an undeniable fact that Win9x users are not really
catered for. If that is the case you will just have to find the ibserver.exe
and run it as an application.
Checking the platform, working out the permutations and offering the
appropriate options is actually quite a task. We are also slightly hampered by
the fact that we do not have a decent GUI client tool yet. That said, all
feedback on this is welcome - packaging and install issues are perhaps now our
biggest challenge to overcome prior to final release.
