I've used RedHat for ages, but since Mandrake 7.2 it has been much better.

Mandrake is basically RedHat but they spent a lot of time making
install/running simple. Nothings perfect, but we've had a lot less
trouble with supported hardware and configuration than the RetHat machines.

But it's a changing world, two years ago there was no mainstream
journaled filing system, when I loaded Mandrake 8.1, there is now a
choice of 4. In the same way the "best" distribution also changes. But
basically you can't go too far wrong.
