I can't say for sure (because I haven't tried it!!) but I asked a
similar question some time ago about using a UDF in a grouping clause...
At the time Firebird couldn't handle it, but I believe (and again I
maybe wrong) that I received an email sometime later saying that it now
can???

Someone else may (that is, will!) know more...

I can't say for InterBase, but it's something Firebird will have at some
point, probably FB2.

As I recall from discussions in ib-Architect, it requires a change in
the on-disk structure and a lot of very complex coding at various
levels.
