Firebird - Professional Services Group

The aims of the Firebird Professional Services Group are to support
developers working on the open source Firebird code and to encourage use
of FirebirdSQL by providing professional services to the
Firebird/InterBase(r) user community.

The idea is to make support and development services available at an
hourly rate to any individual or organisation wanting to contract
expertise for work related to Firebird or any InterBase(r) version.
Proceeds from such work would be shared among the Firebird Development
Fund (10 percent), administration (5 per cent) and the developer(s)
commissioned for the work.

The Professional Services Group is starting out as a small group of
independent developers possessing a range of skills on Linux, Unix and
Windows platforms, including systems development, building secure web
and ecommerce sites, using java, C++, Delphi and several other
toolsets. As the division grows it will be incorporated into a more
formal entity.

We are happy to consider work in specialised areas such as bug
resolution or porting Firebird to new platforms. Resumes can be
supplied on request.

The exact cost will vary depending upon the base per hour rate set by
the individual developers. I expect some variation based on skills,
availability, and country of origin. As a starting point a guideline
figure for my rate is $80US per hour, more or less, according to
requirements and conditions.

This is initially a trial venture in an environment where melding open
source development and the need of developers to subsist in a business
sense is undergoing a process of experimentation. I think a real
opportunity exists here to provide ways for businesses that benefit from
a strong, open source Firebird to support it financially without
compromising the open and free status of Firebird.

As this venture evolves, we continue to talk with Ann & Paul from
IBPhoenix, about the possibilities for synergistic relationships between
the two groups.

Cheers

Mark
