Subject Questions about using Interbase 6.0
Author David Brereton
Hello,

I have some problems that I am trying to resolve before we start shipping a
product with the new 6.0 release. We have been using 5.6 and have been
having several problems with that release as well.

Problems:
1) How long should it take to back up a database file? In several cases,
our customer's database can get up to 1.5 Gigs. I've been trying to backup
the databases and lately each time I try, the computer just gets locked up
and in about 1 day I have to just reboot the computer. Right now, my
Windows 2000 computer is running on about 6 hours for the backup.

2) When I run a query on a table to determine the minimum date that is in
the table, it can take up to about 20 minutes to return the answer. I use
the following query:

SELECT MIN(TIME_ENTERED) FROM TQI_STAFFLOCATION

Also, when the above query does return, the hard drive continues to run
constantly until I have to either shut down Interbase, or I reboot the
computer. What could Interbase possibly be doing?

Question: How much RAM should a computer have when running Interbase 6.0?
5.6?

I have several instances where the database would get so screwed up at a
customer's site that I have just had to start with a fresh database and let
my software reload 3 months worth of data. Thankfully, we have been keeping
the raw data in compressed form for several years so I can always restore
the data that way.

Thank you for any and all suggestions.

David
