The CSTRING(1) FREE_IT solved the problem indeed. And I was able to create
my first 'trivial' UDF. I just want to correct myself in that UDFs have to
be defined as cdecl and not stdcall.

I trust the correction of the function declaration was made in firebird.
Although I am very tempted to use firebird, I read a lot about installation
problems such as having to enter registry values manually. Any truth on this
bit?
