Hi Mike

RE: support queries in firebird-devel - and checking FreeBSD working.

It's easy to accidently sound a bit gruff in replies, and turn off people
who are just starting out.

These newsgroups don't have a lot of traffic, and often people enquiring
don't want to join a whole raft of newslists first off. Probably if going
to the trouble of replying, its probably best (in my opinion) to point to
the newsgroup they should be using, cc the reply to the ib-support
newsgroup, and if possible answer the question.

First time people often get caught this way.

So (following my own example) ib-support@egroups.com seems to be the
"firebird" friendly support newsgroup (news.atkin.com). As a child of
InterBase the borland.com and mers.com newsgroups will also contain volumes
of relevant stuff.

There are some well know configuration things, like localhost (and you
windows machine name) being in /etc/hosts.equiv file, most of these are
documented in smallprint somewhere and a bit of research should find them.

For your specific case, I'd suggest trying to connect to your freebsd server
first locally on the box using isql etc. Then try remote using isql on the
freebsd box to localhost:../fred.gdb and then testing the remote connection
from window box. When you it a problem a very specific post explainging
exactly what you did, will probably help get you an quick answer.

(Helen does ib-support allow posts from the public or do you have to join
first? (last time I looked the option was set for join first, also the
egroups archive for ib-support should probably be public). I think for a
support newslist it might be handy if it allows public posts for exactly the
newcommer situation.

Repeat offenders for off topic posts are of course fair game ;-).

Cheers

Mark

I appreciate that you want to keep discussions on topic. However, it is

rare to stumble across a user of IB/Firebird on FreeBSD. Although I
don't want to be a distraction to the development community, I responded

to the author since he is probably one of 10 people in these forums who
might be able to help me. With odds that low, I don't dare fish in an
empty pond. I try to go where the fish are known to swim.

Since you seem to want to kill my interaction with a potential source of

help, I have asked my question to the author directly. However, knowing

that few people post their true email addresses in newsgroups, that is a

long shot too. Hopefully, I will get my answers and become a big
supporter/evangelist of IB/Firebird within my company. If not, there is

always PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and Oracle.
