Microsoft KB article Q142719 explains what is happening in detail, and
branches to Q126402 which I think will be a reg hack to bypass this problem
(to a point).

I will also end up trying the old standby of shoving more memory into the
system.

Out of curiousity, what hardware was the 980GB database that was referenced
in Firebird release notes running on?

The file open is failing - it would fail if you tried
to open it with notepad, or anything. My knowledge of
Windows system management has been exhausted - no challenge
there. What Windows mean when it says: "Insufficient system
resources exist to complete the requested service"?
