Have you tried it on another XP installation? Here is what I have found out:
Yesterday I installed XP Home as an upgrade from Windows ME and got the slow
connection times. Then I decided to completely install XP on a clean system
and the performance issues disappeared even when SFP is enabled!
I really don't know if it has something to do with the update but you should
give it a try.
