In windows, the maximum single file database size is the largest file
your filesystem can hold. In *nix the maximum single file database is
2GB or 4GB, depending on with *nix you are using. I am working on
increasing that limit for *nix to be in line with Windows. This is a
Firebird only feature. I'm not sure which build first had the large
file feature, but I think it is present in the latest beta.
