No, both are 64 bit. But there are two fbclient.dll:

c:\Program Files\Firebird\Firebird_2_5\bin\fbclient.dll,
date Oct 03, 2011, 870912 bytes

c:\Program Files\Firebird\Firebird_2_5\WOW64\fbclient.dll,
date Oct 03, 2011, 548864 bytes

Both were put there by the installation process.

I did this with both dll's, with different results:

Python 3.2.3 (default, Apr 11 2012, 07:12:16) [MSC v.1500 64 bit (AMD64)] on win

Looks like something is wrong with the dll in WOW64, but what, and what should I do? Simply remove it (but perhaps it is needed somewhere)? Uninstall and reinstall Firebird?

Thank you for your help,
