One of the quickest ways of checking what is going on is to check the database
access direct. Flamerobin often gives feedback on what is wrong since it would
normally use the same client and server setup as php is trying to access.
It's higher up on my check sheet than getting php running ;) In fact I normally
get the database working even before installing apache and php ...
Where the database is on another machine, then I still make sure I can access it
directly from the slave machine.
