Only partly true ... Linux has always worked prefectly out of the box.

The windows php support team are not at all helpful! But I have NO problems with
my own windows servers. However many of my customer sites have now eased back on
their windows only rules and we run linux servers for the FLAP/FWAP stack so
I've not had to worry quite so much about windows as a server. My CURRENT
testbed is running on Windows 7, and this machine is dual boot to linux. 64 bit
setups on both, and the W7 setup is *4* times slower than the linux setup
running from the same test suit, actually the same website on a shared disk. The
XP and W2k servers are running fine and have a lot better performance than W7.

I have 32 build of 5.3.8 running here with both php_interbase and pdo_firebird
but it may well be that I got the pdo driver from the zip. The 'msi' has
php_interbase?

The how was your copy of Firebird installed? Without an accessible firebird
client neither driver will load. Can you access the server from Flamebobin?
