I have been using XFCE with Mandriva, so I'm fairly happy with that. I
think the niggles from the core security changes on Mandriva are
reflecting through which still cause problems :(
It's the subtle differences in location of files which is the biggest
pain. One has to think where is Firebird on this installation :(

Codebue - where does centOS end up putting Firebird and PHP?
